Mantras for Monday: Beginning the Week with Intention

Conscious·3 June 2026· 4 min read

Monday gets a bad name. It arrives heavy with everything we postponed and everything we dread. But in the older calendar, Monday — Somavara — belongs to the Moon: the mind, the emotions, the soft beginnings. It is, by tradition, a good day to set a tone.

A mantra is not a wish. It is a sound you repeat until it repeats you — until its rhythm steadies the breath and the breath steadies the mind. Here are three short ones to begin a week with.

To clear the path — Ganesha

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha

Ganesha is the remover of obstacles, the one invoked before anything begins. Chant this when the week ahead feels blocked or daunting. Nine or eleven slow repetitions is enough to feel the knot loosen a little.

To steady the mind — Gayatri

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah, Tat Savitur Varenyam, Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat

The Gayatri is a prayer to the light of understanding — that our thoughts be illumined and rightly guided. It is traditionally chanted at first light. Even one slow, attentive round is a way of asking the week to be clear-headed rather than reactive.

To meet what's hard — Mahamrityunjaya

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushti-vardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan, Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat

A mantra for healing and release — for the weeks that carry worry about health or loss. Its image is tender: may we be freed as easily as a ripe cucumber falls from the vine.

How to use them

  • Pick one, not all three. A single mantra held lightly beats three rushed.
  • Chant aloud if you can, under your breath if you can't. The point is the rhythm, not the volume.
  • Use a count — a mala of 108, or simply nine breaths. Let the counting carry you so the mind has less to do.

You are not bargaining with Monday. You are tuning yourself before the week plays.
